Unlocking digital opportunities: Promoting e-commerce for inclusive trade growth

Leaving no one behind by investing in inclusive trading opportunities in small-island and landlocked African, Caribbean and Pacific economies

Lab Session – 18 June, 17:00– 18:15 Room D5

The digitalization of the global economy is increasingly gaining terrain as the use of modern technologies is catapulting global exchanges into a new era. ACP small-island and land-locked economies can leapfrog into prosperity through E-commerce in the digital age. However, they face inherent challenges of a weak private sector, high trade costs and lack of proper technology and trade data in order to bolster opportunities for SMEs traders and intra-regional trade. E-commerce is seen as a catalyst to boosting exports to foreign markets, and helps tap into foreign supply chains, supporting entrepreneurship and promoting the integration of SMEs into regional and global value chains. To that end, ACP countries require more policy space to seize e-commerce trading opportunities.
